It has sadly come to my attention that there are people (perhaps an entire generations worth) that think “Get Lucky” is Daft Punk’s first hit. This is so upsetting. They have been around for over 20 years and I decided to take some time to not only make a montage of what I think some of their best jams are, but also provide some fun info so everyone can educate themselves. This may only get 1 view, but I just feel it’s necessary to make.
The french duo Daft Punk consists of musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. They met in 1987 in school, and after failed attempts of making a band with other people they formed Daft Punk in 1992 and are pretty much responsible for the french house music scene blowing up.
Random fact: Thomas Bangalter was a part of the trio that made up the group Stardust which was a one-time collaboration that gave us "The Music Sounds Better With You."
Daft Punk stays being sampled. Famously in hip hop by Busta Rhymes and Kanye West (who arguably has beat Diddy as "King of the Sample"). Daft Punk also helped spawn one of the best viral videos ever.
Seeing all the posts about people being pissed they didn’t take their helmets off to accept their Grammy was part of my motivation to make this. The helmets are part of their art because anonymity is important to them - it forces people to concentrate on the music rather than what they look like and it’s an extension of their expression.
“We don’t believe in the [celebrity] star system. We want the focus to be on the music. If we have to create an image, it must be an artificial image. That combination hides our physicality and also shows our view of the star system. It is not a compromise.” - Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk
Originally they wore halloween masks for performances and that evolved into the robot helmets and personas. It also comes in handy when they can’t be places - 2 production assistants stood in for them during parts of their art film "Electroma." The 2014 Grammy performance is the first time in the bands history they changed the original design. But, since everyone is curious, here is what they look like without them:
Songs in the video listed in order:
- Da Funk (1995)
- Around The World (1997)
- One More Time (2001)
- Aerodynamic (2001)
- Digital Love (2001)
- Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
- Something About Us (2001)
- Technologic (2005)
- Derezzed (2010)
- Get Lucky ft Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers (2013)
Every video from the album “Discovery” (which tracks 3-8 are from) was an episode of an Anime film titled “Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.” Here is the film in it’s entirety and here is an explanation of the plot if you’re interested. I used a lyric video for track 6 just because I liked it better.
Daft Punk is great and they should get the credit they deserve. Plus, they’re knights so that makes them even more awesome. Everyone should love Daft Punk.
P.S. Here are 2 fun mash-ups:
This post deserves more notes. Just sayin.
